News - Tips for Buying a Yoga Mat by Larry Langley - April 5th, 2004
These
days with the growth in the popularity of yoga there are many yoga
mats on the market. Yoga "sticky" mats vary in quality
and price. Besides price, other questions to consider when buying
a mat for your practice:
How
should it be cleaned?
How
does it hold up to cleaning?
Does
it lay flat on the floor after being rolled up?
Is
it too sticky!
( When I lift my feet does the mat stick to my feet)
Do
I have good traction even with sweaty feet?
For
those in colder climates, does the mat remain supple when left
in the car in the cold?
Is
it light enough to carry easily?
Does
the manufacturer specify a "life-span" for the mat?
When
the mat wears out and is finally disposed of, is it environmentally
friendly?
A
few common sense tests - that are practical only if the mat
is out of its package and if you have several mats available to
choose from:
Pinch
the mat(s) between your thumb forefinger to compare the mats resistance
to compression.
Moisten
the mat to simulate sweating then try to move your hand along
the mat surface to determine the mats "traction when wet"
Find
an ink eraser and "erase" for a time on a sample of
the mat material...does the mat crumble easily?
As
you practice your intention needs to be focused on your breathing
and the pose and not on the performance of your mat. :-)
